YWCA Shelter Review

The YWCA Shelter of Cobb County was a nice shelter. I received help to enroll into transitional housing and I stayed for 2 years with no help afterwards.

The steps that I took to get help from this battered women’s shelter was easy. The room that I was provided was very small, neat and clean.

While at the shelter, I had chores and a designated day to wash my clothes. In the family room, we were provided chairs and a working TV.

Every week, I had to check in with a case manager with updates on my progress for stability and permanent housing. Finally, one day my case manager gave me The Center For Family Resources number for me to call for help for transitional housing.

I was given free counseling at no charge. It was accessible because it was on campus. The office was nice and the woman who gave me counseling was knowledgeable of my condition.

There were classes given every week. I learned that there were more than one form of abuse. For example, physically, mentally, emotionally, sexually, financially, and or culturally.

Clothes and other things were donated often. The best thing that I received from someone who donated was from a director for Mary Kay Cosmetics. This beautiful classy woman donated Miracle sets worth nearly $200 to every battered woman at the YWCA Shelter. The Mary Kay director even sat through our whole class just to see our faces light up. I was so happy and grateful for the Miracle set.

Overall, this was a nice shelter but I guess my expectations were too high. I assumed that I would receive permanent housing without any hassles.

I would suggest this shelter for safety and the absolute basics. Things may have changed because this experience is from nearly 20years ago. When a battered woman and or children needs help, our choices are limited.

Average players wants to be left alone. Good players wants to be coached. Great players want to be told the truth.~Unknown
